It’s never easy to find a job. To get hired, one must go through a lengthy job search. It becomes more difficult as a result of competition. You are, of course, not the only one looking for work. The first approach you must consider is how to be chosen over other qualified candidates. How can you outperform the competition?
A good resumé is key. It is maybe a piece of document but it is the first thing that a hiring manager sifts through when selecting possible candidates for employment.
It is advisable to make your resumé one or two pages long if you have ten years of work experience. Make it short and on-point by eliminating unnecessary information. Personal details like home address, religion, age, or marital status are irrelevant at the moment so there is no need to mention them on your resumé.
A good resumé contains a summary of your work experience and skills. Leave out work experience that is not related to the job you are applying for. Instead, focus on your skills to make a good impression.
So what are the skills you need to include on your resumé? Actually, there are two types of skills that grab the attention of your would-be employer: hard skills and soft skills.
Hard skills are technical abilities that you have in school, training with certifications, or job experience. Soft skills are non-technical skills often referred to as social skills. You need both skills to be considered a well-rounded person.
Hard Skills Examples
- Accounting/bookkeeping. Mention your knowledge in invoicing, collection and payment, account reconciliation and background in accounting/bookkeeping softwares such as Quickbooks or Xero.
- Data analysis. Include your experience in data gathering and experience using data analysis tools.
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Coding expertise and managing systems like Oracle and NetSuite.
- Human Resources. Promote your expertise in handling employees, pre-hiring and hiring process, training, and team-building efforts.
- Mathematics. Finance, business, and engineering requires Math competency. Marketing editors and copy editors analyze survey results as well.
- Multilingualism. If you have fluency in another language, highlight this on your resumé.
- Process automation. Emphasize your experience in setting up and managing smart softwares and artificial intelligence systems for businesses.
- Product design. Talk up about your graphic or web design experience.
- Project management. Show your ability to see through a project from beginning to end, knowledge in project management softwares, or certification.
- Research skills. Showcase your ability to use research tools.
- Software proficiency. Many firms demand a basic to intermediate understanding of Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs, whereas IT-related positions necessitate a much deeper understanding of various softwares.
- Search engine optimization. Include knowledge of keyword optimization, data analysis tools, and content creation.
- Typing skills. Mention fast and keyboarding abilities if you are applying as a medical coder, transcriber, or data entry specialist. Include results of your typing speed test as necessary.
- Writing/editing. List writing projects you have accomplished in the past and your ability in creating well-written memos, emails, and internal communications. Use your cover letter and email to your recruiter to show off your writing talents.
Soft Skills Examples
- Adaptability. Companies seek personnel that can swiftly adapt to changing situations and are willing to try new methods and technology.
- Attention to detail. It is critical to be able to follow instructions in order to finish your assignment, especially while working with others.
- Collaboration. Working with others is a key indicator of how effective you might be as a teammate or leader.
- Communication. Employers, particularly in the customer-relations area, strive for individuals who can communicate well in writing and verbally.
- Creativity. Show openness to innovation and mental flexibility. Employers like someone who can present ideas and offer new approaches to problems.
- Customer service. It is the ability to provide services to both internal and external customers. It also includes qualities like active listening, empathy, problem-solving, and communication.
- Decision-making. The confidence to work on your own or solve a problem without further guidance is one skill that an employer is looking for an applicant.
- Empathy. One soft skill you can employ in working with coworkers, customers, and clients is the ability to comprehend where others are coming from.
- Leadership. Highlight professional experience where you have inspired and motivated team members, or the ability to strategize.
- Multitasking. Demonstrate an ability to handle multiple tasks at once.
- Positivity. Show your “can-do” attitude.
- Problem solving. The capacity to handle problems without the assistance of your superiors is a valuable asset to have on your resumé.
- Self-motivation. Indicate that you are a self-driven individual by taking the initiative to solve problems and getting the job done.
- Time management. A valuable skill to have on your resumé. Employers want to see if you can manage many jobs while staying on schedule.
- Work ethic. Draw out qualities like honesty, punctuality, and reliability. This skill increases your marketability.
You do not need to list all of these skills on your resumé. Customize your resumé to meet the needs of the employer. Use the job descriptions as hints on what to put on your resumé.
As much as you want to highlight your skills on your resumé, avoid exaggeration. Lying about your skills or credentials is a big turnoff to companies. It will definitely impact your trustworthiness. Be honest.
Lastly, proofread your resumé prior to sending it out to employers. Check out for spelling, grammar, and formatting errors.
Your resumé will either qualify or disqualify you for a job, so make sure to showcase the right skills on it for the best outcomes!
